Crimping is the process of joining wires by compressing them together. It is often used in cable installation, since crimping is quick and requires no soldering iron or additional material. Simply hammering or pressing the wires in a vise is not enough, though. Making a crimped connection that carries signals well requires use of a crimping tool that will compress the wires evenly. Heavy duty crimp tools for thick wire come in three basic types.

Hand Crimpers

  • Heavy-duty hand crimpers have a long handle and a head, into which the ends of the cables being crimped are inserted. These tools have long handles to provide more leverage when squeezed on crimp cables. They have multiple rotating heads that accommodate different gauges of cable without changing tools, and create either hexagonal or rounded crimps.
  • Hydraulic Crimpers

  • Hydraulic crimpers effect cables in the same way as the hand tool, but amplify the user's strength by including a small pump in the handle. The user closes the crimper around the cables and then squeezes a trigger while moving the pump handle to build up pressure in the crimp head. This allows stronger cables to be easily crimped on site.
  • Pneumatic Crimpers

  • A pneumatic crimper is a crimp head that attaches to the pneumatic air feed in a machine shop or factory. It uses the pressure of the compressed air in the lines to force together the cables placed inside the crimping head. As such, it is not as flexible as hydraulic or hand crimpers, as it cannot be used to crimp cables on the site of repair jobs. In a shop setting, though, pneumatic crimpers save the strength of employees and allow them to crimp large quantities of thick cable.
